KRATER Commonspace

How do we produce a free cultural spirit in Amsterdam’s city center?

During the winter of 2022/2023, we legally occupied a large space in Amsterdam's commercial epicenter (Kalverstraat). Run by Thijs van de Loo and myself, the space quickly became an open atelier, event-space, exhibition space and creative community hub. The focus was on experimentation with the debris from the city (packaging, demolition waste), and experimental programming of music, cinema and art. The mission and the involvement of the community culminated in the exhibition 'Relics, Rituals & Debris,' produced without funding by 20 members of the community. It exhibited co-created sculptures made from gathered waste, performance art, talks, music and finished with an assembly looking into the future of Krater. The project ended prematurely because the space had to be renovated, which took away the potential to grow into a self-reliant cultural freespace. Nevertheless, the momentum of Krater built a trust of what we can do together and made a lot of projects and collaborations possible. Its space is now fluid and empowers us to shape the city we live in.
