Cinema IJburg
How to bring neighbors together in their shared spaces?
The goal of Cinema IJburg was to challenge the use of the semi-public spaces of collective housing projects in IJburg, Amsterdam, with a cultural program. Next to the fact that IJburg doesn’t have a cinema, the large collective spaces in the plinth of many (CPO) houses – shared by the residents of the building block – are often unused, unfurnished or stuck in lack of initiative and/or coordination. The nomadic cinema visited 6 spaces in the winter of 2024 with a program of one short film, a feature length film and a dialogue with the local community about their space. Some spaces had to be transformed and furnished, others were already equipped with the required technique and infrastructure. Each screening brought in new people from the local community and required close collaborations with the venues and living groups which agreed to co-host these events under our coordination. The result was a notable community engagement with a diverse audience attending each of the events. With the film program curated around the themes of community, urban life and collective ways of organizing life, Cinema IJburg showed an optimistic way forward for these semi-public spaces, which play an important role in the development of cultural life in IJburg. To be continued.
